Why this matters more in 2026
Google has started requiring that apps be registered by developers who have verified their identity with Google before they can be installed on certified Android phones. Enforcement began on September 30, 2026 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, so far only for apps from seven participating app stores, and Google says it will expand to all apps worldwide in 2027. Google's help page says non-certified devices, such as phones with a de-Googled operating system that isn't Google-certified, are exempt. What the change means and which phones it affects.
How the operating systems compare
A de-Googled phone can run nearly every Android app, or almost none, depending on its operating system. Compare all 12 systems side by side: Android app compatibility, Google services, app stores, and whether each project is still maintained.
